  6. If distillate has dark shade, it can be filtered with gauze or cotton wool.

The reason for unpleasant smell is excess fusel oils, which is hard to remove even after several filtrations. Adsorbent in this case is activated coal. Specialized coal for winemaking exists. The most widespread ones are coconut and birch activated charcoal.

There is a way to clean alcohol drink without coal column. In this case coal is crushed and added to homebrew, and infused from several hours to week, periodically shaking, and then filtered. Thanks to porous structure activated coal absorbs fusel oils, cleaning brew.

Homebrew characteristics depend on coal quality. So only coal produced with special equipment can be used for homebrewing. Cleaning homebrew with coal is an easy way to transform murky unsightly liquid into worthy drink.
